Fashion
I’m a real skirts girl but I hear trousers are back for autumn/winter. I’m willing to try them out but wondered how to wear them if you’re not shaped like a catwalk model. Any tips?
Ok, so trousers have, of course, always been around – what have the vast majority of the population been wearing to work all these years, after all? – but, this season, they are officially fashionable, with an appearance on the catwalk for the first time since the nineties.
Sienna MillerPart of the uber-practical minimalism trend, they were simple and straight up and down. Forget harem, track pants and flares – these are tailored trousers without any bells and whistles. Stella McCartney, for example, offers a very woman-friendly collection in which trousers come cropped and worn with oversized sweaters. Marc Jacobs and Chloe, meanwhile, put trousers at the centre of their seventies-inspired look (Diane Keaton in Annie Hall has to be a reference point) with the latter brand creating no less than seven different styles of trouser.
H&M trousersThere’s no doubt that these strides look fabulous on willowy catwalk models but they are also easily transferable to us mortals too. Because there is no specific 'it’ shape, this is a trend to try on and find the style that suits your body type. Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker, both petite, keep their styles skinny and cropped. Svelte Sienna Miller prefers a looser, high-waisted shape, and wears them with blouses tucked in. And statuesque Claudia Schiffer loves wide-legged shapes.
The general rule for all to follow? Wear heels to add glamour and go for a pair that sits comfortably on the waist rather than hip. That way, you’ll get the most leg-lengthening possible.
As to where to find your trousers, GAP are a good place to start. They have produced the Premium Black Pant Collection – a six style collection that ranges from the relaxed cropped shape to the slouchy boyfit, for £45. French Connection also have a good range that go from office to evening. I like the loose fit of the Moonbeam style – which would look great with a simple vest and sandals. Or try H&M – their butterscotch-coloured strides are a deadringer for the ones on the Chloe catwalk. This season, if you can’t have the body of a catwalk model, at least you can wear her trousers.
