It has taken many paths to reach the point where it is today. Earlier people did not know a lot about the chemistry of materials, so they used anything which would bring colour on their face or skin for that matter. This was very dangerous to health and people became sick because of the poisonous materials that were sometimes involved in the makeup. With the passage of time, people became more aware about what materials to use and what kind of things should be used in making the material of the makeup that will not be harmful.
Around the time of 19th century, makeup was evolved to become what it is in the present times. But in the middle, it was considered a bad thing as only the prostitutes applied makeup and the English royalty did not take it as something good. Queen Victoria even banned the use of them. And Hitler used to think that to use makeup is below the women of the Aryan race.
A change in the attitude came when the women took pride in their beauty and glamourised it. This has led to the wide spread use of makeup by women in modern times. But even in this era, it is not free from negative effects with the controversy being that of the animal testing of the products. Despite all of this, makeup is still the most popular thing in the world and the makeup companies are earning huge profits as their consumption grows every year almost.
